Everything You Need to Know

FAQ

General

What is your photography style?

Editorial, cinematic, and timeless. I blend fine art sensibility with documentary storytelling — meaning I'm always watching and present, but never intrusive. The result is imagery that feels both elevated and real.

Where are you based and do you travel?

I'm based in Waukee, Iowa, and I serve all of Iowa and Minnesota. Travel is fully in my DNA — I'll go anywhere for the right story, from a backyard session in Des Moines to a destination elopement on a Florida beach. Travel fees may apply for sessions outside of Iowa and Minnesota.

How long have you been shooting?

I launched Amy Minikus Photo + Film in 2023, and it has been the most wonderful journey. Every session teaches me something new, and I bring that passion and intentionality to every shoot.

Do you shoot both photo and film?

Yes. In addition to photography, I offer cinematography coverage through The Motion Collection — a curated film experience designed to complement your photo gallery and preserve not just how things looked, but how they felt.

Weddings & Elopements

How do we officially book?

Start by scheduling a wedding consult through the contact page. We'll connect, talk through your vision, and I'll walk you through the process. A signed contract and retainer secure your date.

Do you shoot engagement sessions?

Absolutely. Engagement sessions are a wonderful way to get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. Many couples include them as an add-on to their wedding package — ask about availability when you inquire.

Do I need a second shooter?

If your guest count exceeds 100 or your wedding party totals more than 10 people, I recommend adding a second shooter to ensure full coverage. A second photographer can be added during your consultation call.

What is your turnaround time for weddings?

You'll receive your full wedding gallery within 30 business days. I also offer a same-day slideshow — a curated set of edited images delivered at your reception so you can share the day while it's still happening.

What if we have bad weather on our wedding day?

Weather is part of the story. I shoot in all conditions and will work with you on a backup plan if needed. Some of the most beautiful wedding images come from imperfect skies.

Do you limit how many weddings you shoot per year?

Yes. I intentionally limit the number of weddings I take each year so that every couple receives my full attention and energy. When I'm with you, I'm fully with you — no double-booking, ever.

Portrait Sessions

What should we wear?

I provide a style guide after booking that walks through wardrobe in detail. In general: choose outfits that feel like you, coordinate without matching too perfectly, and avoid heavy logos or busy patterns. When in doubt, classic and simple photographs beautifully.

What if my kids won't cooperate?

Completely normal — and honestly, some of the best moments happen when kids are being exactly themselves. We'll play, move around, and let things unfold naturally. You'll end up with a beautiful, honest gallery.

We're not photogenic. Will we look awkward?

That's what I'm here for. The first 20 minutes of any session feels a little stiff — that's normal for everyone. I use natural direction and gentle posing that flows from one moment to the next so nothing feels forced.

How many photos will I receive?

I don't limit your gallery to an arbitrary number. Every image that tells your story makes the cut. You'll receive a full, edited collection — not a trimmed-down package.

Logistics

Are you insured?

Yes, I carry professional liability insurance. Many venues require proof of insurance — I'm happy to provide documentation upon request.
