Kamryn + Isaiah

There were six people in that church. Kamryn and Isaiah. Their maid of honor and best man. The priest. And me.

I keep coming back to that number — how the whole of it fit into a single row of pews, how sound moved differently through a space that wasn't filled. I'd photographed these two before, at Waterworks Park in Des Moines, where their story had a particular ease to it, a naturalness I don't always get to witness. Walking into St. Thomas Aquinas that morning felt like the next page of something already beautiful.

Before the ceremony, Kamryn stood alone at a tall window, the exposed brick behind her, her bouquet of dusty blue and white roses held loosely at her side. She wasn't performing anything. She was just — there. Still. Looking out through the glass at something I couldn't see. Without the noise of a bridal suite, without the orchestrated chaos of a large wedding morning, that silence had a texture to it. I photographed her and said nothing. Some moments ask you to stay quiet.

When the ceremony began, I was near the back of the pews — which is to say, only a handful of feet from everyone present. There were no rows of guests to shoot over, no sea of faces between us. And yet when I raised my camera and found Kamryn and Isaiah seated together at the front, turned slightly toward each other, both smiling, it felt like the most private thing I had ever seen. Not because no one was watching. Because they had forgotten anyone was.

Later, they knelt together at the altar steps, backs to us all, hands just touching. Her veil falling long. The sanctuary open ahead of them — candles, stained glass, the deep quiet of a space built for exactly this kind of weight. I don't have a better way to describe it than this: they were somewhere else. Somewhere that had nothing to do with witnesses.

Six people. A whole life beginning. I've photographed weddings with two hundred guests that felt smaller than this one.
